What is Massage Therapy?
Massage Therapy can be used as a treatment for pain relief, injury rehabilitation or as a preventative therapy for stress reduction, mental well-being and improved body function. It is appropriate for all ages, from babies to the elderly, because techniques vary according to the individual, their needs and their age.
It is effective for a wide range of conditions because it increases circulation to tissue and improves the lymphatic drainage system. This increases cellular waste removal and enhances the function of the immune system.
All tissue benefits from the release of tension. There are many types of massage ranging from very gentle effleurage and drainage techniques to deep tissue, trigger point and acupressure.
Pain is a signal from a body part that is injured or otherwise distressed. Masking the pain with pain-killers does nothing to treat the cause of the pain. When addressed early, injured or distressed tissue can be returned to a functional state more easily than if neglected for months or years.
Good health is one of the most important aspects of your life.

Lymphatic Drainage Massage
The lymphatic system directly influences the immune system. It is a passive system, relying on the pumping action of muscles and the movement of the diaphragm to remove tissue wastes. Although massage therapy always affects the lymphatic system, a more specialized and very gentle massage, lymphatic drainage, can be chosen to specifically target an increase in its efficiency.

Is a Doctor's referral needed?
A Doctor's note is usually required by your Extended Health Care plan to activate coverage. O.H.I.P. does not cover massage fees but costs are deductible for income tax purposes as medical expenses for treatments from a Licensed Therapist.
Reports are provided to other Health Care Practitioners for any condition requiring feedback.

In addition, check your policy:
Massage Therapy benefits have recently increased substantially and many insurance companies are covering massage under "Extended Health Care Plan".  It is important to research and find out if you are covered.
