The day Kathryn Jones started to take responsibility for her own health marked a turning point in her life.
Troubled by severe allergies since early childhood, she took medication for years just to be able to get through the day. For many years prescription drug dependence and severe reactions depleted her immune system.

In 1988 Kathy was diagnosed with Crohn's disease (acute inflammatory bowel) which can result in major surgery or death. A few more years passed as the disease progressed almost to the point of debilitation.

In 1995 facing almost constant pain she turned to Naturopathic Medicine.

In 1996 she realized a longtime dream by opening the Natural Health Clinic & Educational Centre in Simcoe, Ontario, as a way to put people in touch with a more natural approach to health. The centre offers a variety of therapies, from Acupuncture and Massage Therapy to Kinesiology, Therapeutic Touch and Reflexology. Workshops and interest courses are available for those who want to learn how to help themselves as well as certification for practitioners.
Kathryn stresses that these therapies are not intended to take the place of traditional medicine, but rather to complement it. "We provide the information and let our clients go from there. Our goal is to make alternative choices more accessible." As a Registered Nutritional Consultant she feels her job is not to prescribe, but to direct people to sources of information to improve overall health and wellbeing. "I'm not advising them medically. I'm giving them information they could get on their own. The problem is that it's confusing when you don't know where to look or what to do with the information."

In her own case, Kathy has gradually moved to a mainly vegetarian diet which works for her. "Everyone progresses at their own pace. What works for some doesn't necessarily work for others. The body is designed to care for itself and alternative health care is geared to keeping the body in balance so that it functions the way it should."

While these therapies don't offer a magic cure for all ills, non-traditional choices for maintaining good health are becoming more acceptable.
